Why sulfate-free?   "Sulfates can be harmful to health as they can build up in the body overtime," explains certified trichologist Veronica Joseph. "They can strip the natural oils from the scalp and hair strands potentially leading to a dry scalp and hair. Some sulfates are derived from petroleum, known to be a carcinogenic ingredient. Petroleum based products when applied to the hair or scalp can coat hair strands not allowing moisture in or out."

Ingredients and their benefits:

1. Sodium Cocoyl Isethionate

This popular ingredient in gentle soaps and shampoos encourages dirt to attach itself to them, which in turn makes it easier for it to be washed away.

It is one of the few surfactants which is gentle and safe to be used on your skin. It has a conditioning effect on your skin and hair making it soft and supple. Sodium Cocoyl Isethionate is known to be a non-toxic, non-allergic and non-irritating ingredient to be used on your skin and hair.

This compound is a good sulfate-free alternative for people that want to avoid commonly known surfactants such as sodium lauryl sulfate (SLS).

Sodium cocoyl isethionate is a natural ingredient that is derived from coconuts, specifically coconut oil.

2. Sodium Lauryl Sulfoacetate powder

Sodium Lauryl Sulfoacetate is derived from coconut and palm oils; a safe, skin-friendly surfactant (foaming agent) for both skin and hair. This mild plant-derived surfactant creates a rich, luxurious lather that effectively removes surface oil, dirt, and bacteria without stripping or drying sensitive skin or hair.

Sodium Lauryl Sulfoacetate (SLSA) has a very similar name to one of the most common sulfate ingredients, Sodium Lauryl Sulfate (SLS), so you may easily get confused with the two. Both ingredients create bubbles and lather in cleansers, but that is pretty much where the similarity ends.

3. Theobroma Cacao (Cocoa) Seed Butter

Cocoa butter deeply penetrates and nourishes the hair, while soothing and supporting scalp health.  It will ensure treatment of dry and damaged hair and will result in soft, shiny hair. It also makes hair tangle free. Its hydrating and emollient properties help to deeply nourish the hair shafts and condition them. 6. Cocamidopropyl Betaine

Cocamidopropyl Betaine is a versatile product which is known to be quite gentle and mild for topical application, hence extensively used in skincare and haircare products. It acts as a surfactant which gently washes away the dirt, grime and dust from your skin and hair with its enhanced foaming properties.

Cocamidopropyl Betaine is very well tolerated by the skin and is so mild that it is internationally recommended for use in foaming products designed for use by babies and infants. It is also suitable for those who may be prone to eczema and sensitive skin.

7. Hydrolized wheat protein

Hair damage results from trauma from both mechanical and chemical sources, like bleaching and heat damage. Wheat proteins have a high amount of these disulfide bonds, and using wheat protein can help to connect the broken bonds on the hair surface.

8. Mentha Piperita Oil (Peppermint oil)

Increasing circulation with a vasodilator like peppermint could potentially improve hair growth and prevent some hair loss. Peppermint menthol also imparts a freshened smell and tingly sensation on the skin and scalp.

While peppermint oil may be known for some skin care benefits, it's also good for your hair and scalp. It may help with dryness, itching, or other scalp problems.
